Chiseled Like a Block of Wood… Or a Masterpiece?
Have you ever prayed for God to make you more like Jesus, then immediately regretted it? Like, you ask God for patience and suddenly every slow driver in the state is in front of you. You ask for humility, and BOOM—your most embarrassing moment of the decade happens in public. Funny how that works. But the truth is, when we ask God to shape us, we rarely expect the chiseling process to be so… painful.
In the classic Skit Guys skit, God’s Chisel, a man stands before God, excited about the idea of being “His masterpiece.” But when God actually starts chiseling—taking away everything that doesn’t belong—suddenly, he’s not so sure he wants to go through with it. And isn’t that exactly how we are?
Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
God isn’t interested in half-finished projects. He’s making something beautiful—even if it doesn’t feel like it at the moment.
The Chisel Hurts—But It’s Necessary
There’s a reason sculptors chip away at a block of stone: if they left it as-is, it would never become the masterpiece they envisioned. But the stone doesn’t get a say in what stays and what goes. The sculptor knows exactly what needs to be removed to reveal what was always meant to be there.
The same is true for us. God isn’t just making us “better versions” of ourselves—He’s making us new creations. That means things have to go. And that’s where the chisel starts working.
John 15:2 – “Every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”
We want transformation without discomfort. We want growth without sacrifice. But you can’t become who God created you to be without letting Him remove what doesn’t belong.
What Needs to Be Chiseled Away?
1. Pride: “I’ve Got This”
We tell God, “I don’t need help—I’m good.” God chisels back, “Actually, you need Me for everything.”
Proverbs 11:2 – “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.”
2. Control: “I Have a Plan”
We say, “But God, this is how my life is supposed to go.” God says, “Trust Me. My plan is better.”
Proverbs 16:9 – “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
3. Secret Sin: “No One Knows”
We hide things in the shadows, but God sees everything. His chisel carves deep because He knows we can’t move forward while holding onto hidden sin.
1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
4. Fear & Doubt: “I’m Not Strong Enough”
We say, “I can’t do this.” God replies, “That’s why I’m here.”
2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
God doesn’t just take things away—He replaces them with something better. He removes pride to give humility, control to give trust, sin to give freedom, and fear to give courage.
The Masterpiece Revealed
One of the most powerful moments in the God’s Chisel skit is when the man finally stops resisting. He lets God do His work. And what does God say?
“You are my masterpiece.”
Not “You will be someday.” Not “If you get your act together.” No—right now, because the work He’s doing in you isn’t about perfection—it’s about making you more like Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
God isn’t giving up on you. He’s shaping you, piece by piece, into exactly who He created you to be.
So… Are You Ready to Be Chiseled?
Look, I get it. Nobody wakes up in the morning excited to be spiritually sandblasted. But here’s the thing—you can either surrender to God’s shaping or fight it and stay stuck.
What would happen if you fully surrendered to God’s chisel today?
Would your pride take a hit? Probably. Would some comforts disappear? Maybe. Would you be better, stronger, and more like Jesus because of it? Absolutely.
James 1:2-4 – “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
So go ahead—ask God to shape you. Just be ready for the chiseling to start.
A Prayer for Surrender
Father,
I know You are shaping me, even when it’s uncomfortable. Help me to trust You, even when the chiseling hurts. Remove what needs to go, and shape me into who You created me to be. I surrender to the work of Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
