Walking the Tightrope of Faith

You ever try to walk a tightrope? No? Me neither, because I enjoy not falling to my doom. But being a Christian in today’s world sometimes feels like we’re all trying to balance on one—on one side, we want to boldly proclaim the gospel, and on the other, we don’t want to be completely cut off from the very people we’re called to reach. It’s a tricky dance, like trying to avoid a church potluck dish labeled “mystery casserole.”

So how do we do it? How do we remove negative influences without isolating ourselves in a Christian bubble? How do we keep our faith strong when the world tells us we’re awful for having it? And how do we stay in the world without becoming of it? Let’s dive in.

Popping the Christian Bubble

I’ll be honest—there was a time in my life when I thought the best way to protect my faith was to shut out everything and everyone that didn’t align with it. I built myself a nice, cozy Christian bubble filled with worship music, Christian books, and friends who believed exactly like I did. It was safe. But it was also a problem.

You see, Jesus didn’t live in a bubble. He dined with sinners, talked with tax collectors, and had conversations with people society had written off. He didn’t become like them, but He was with them. And that hit me hard when I realized my Christian bubble wasn’t protecting my faith—it was suffocating my mission.

As Christians, we have to be careful not to insulate ourselves so much that we lose touch with the very people Jesus told us to reach. But at the same time, we have to guard our hearts against the influences that can pull us away from Him. That’s the tension we live in.

Jesus Didn’t Live in a Bubble—Neither Should We

Jesus Himself showed us how to live in the world without becoming part of it. Look at John 17:15-16:

“My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” (John 17:15-16)

Jesus never prayed for us to be completely removed from the world. Instead, He prayed for our protection while we live in it. That means we don’t need to run for the hills every time we encounter a non-believer or hear a worldly viewpoint. Instead, we stay grounded in Christ while continuing to engage with those around us.

Paul echoed this in 1 Corinthians 5:9-10:

“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.” (1 Corinthians 5:9-10)

In other words, if we avoided all sinners, we’d have to leave the planet. Since that’s not an option, we have to navigate these relationships wisely.

How to Stay in the World Without Losing Your Faith

So, how do we live this out? Here are a few ways to stay engaged with the world while keeping your faith strong:

  1. Stay Rooted in the Word – If you’re not spending time in scripture, you’re setting yourself up for spiritual drift. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Bible keeps us grounded so we can engage the world without getting lost in it.
  2. Choose Your Inner Circle Wisely – Jesus loved everyone, but He had His twelve disciples, and even among them, He had Peter, James, and John as His closest friends. Proverbs 13:20 reminds us, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Your closest friends should encourage your faith, not weaken it.
  3. Engage with Non-Believers with Purpose – It’s one thing to have non-believing friends—it’s another to let them influence your beliefs. Be intentional about these relationships. Love them, be a witness, but don’t compromise your faith to fit in.
  4. Guard Your Mind and Heart – Philippians 4:8 tells us what to focus on: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Fill your mind with things that strengthen your faith.
  5. Stand Firm in the Face of Opposition – Jesus warned us that the world would hate us because of Him (John 15:18-19). If people criticize you for your beliefs, take heart—you’re in good company. But respond with love, not anger. 1 Peter 3:15 says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

Finding the Balance, Living the Mission

At the end of the day, we’re all walking that tightrope—loving people while guarding our hearts, engaging the world while staying faithful to Christ. It’s not easy, and sometimes we’ll mess up. But thankfully, our salvation isn’t based on how perfectly we balance. It’s based on Christ.

So let’s be bold. Let’s share the gospel. Let’s love people fiercely while staying anchored in truth. And if the world thinks we’re terrible people for it? Well, they thought the same about Jesus, and He changed everything anyway.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to be in this world but not of it. Help us to be bold in sharing our faith while remaining steadfast in You. Give us wisdom in our relationships, courage in the face of opposition, and love for those who need to know You. Keep our hearts guarded but our hands open to serve. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
